Green Wine

Organic and Biodynamic winemaking practices are becoming more widespread in Australia and around the world, with many winemakers citing the perceived health benefits that these practices deliver in the vineyard, ultimately resulting, they believe, in better quality wine. Whilst others remain sceptical that improved wine quality can actually be demonstrated, the reduced reliance on synthetic chemicals in the vineyard, together with a greater understanding of vine and soil health, is generally seen as a positive advancement in viticulture by winemakers and consumers alike.

At Dan Murphy's our range includes a wide range of Organic and Biodynamic wines along with a number of Preservative Free (PF) and No Preservative Added (NPA) wines. Here we feature a small selection of those currently available.

Did you KNOW?

Organic wines are not by definition free of preservatives as some might conclude. Use of the natural compound Sulphur Dioxide, a powerful antioxidant (used in winemaking since the Roman Empire) is permissible, though as we see here, a number of Organic and Biodynamic wineries do also make PF/NPA wines.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC WINE

DEFINITION: The simplest definition of Organic wine is wine made from grapes grown adopting the principles of Organic farming, namely without the use of artificial fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. Although producers are increasingly adopting Organic practices, for Australian and New Zealand wine producers to label their wines as such requires certification. Those featured here include producers who have sought and achieved certification.

PRESERVATIVE FREE & NO ADDED PRESERVATIVE WINE

DEFINITION: Wines labelled as PF and NPA are those which have not had preservatives added. The most common of these additives – Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) – may still exist as it can be a natural by-product of fermentation. However this will generally be at miniscule levels, typically 10-15 parts per million or less, compared with most table wines around 100–150ppm. Dried fruit including apricots, purportedly has as much as 3,000ppm.

BIODYNAMIC WINE

DEFINITION: Biodynamics share the basic principles of Organic farming, without its use of artificial fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides, however also adopts a holistic system of regenerative agriculture developed by the late Austrian philosopher Rudolph Steiner in the late 1920s. Here we include certified producers, as indicated, as well as two other notable producers adopting biodynamic practices.

Kalleske Clarry’s
Barossa SA, Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2010

‘Kalleske’s Clarry’s blend is a value-killer most years, and this release is no exception… there’s enough personality laid over the top to elevate it beyond the norm. This personality comes mostly in the form of bitter chocolate and dried herb flowers… it’s another really smart wine from Kalleske.’
